OG Golf Apparel
Heritage x Hip-Hop
In sampling the patterns, prints, and fashions, of traditional golfing attire (your plaids, argyles, tartans, herringbones, houndstooths, and such), and remixing them, OG Golf Apparel aims in its designs to preserve and honour the heritage of golfing fashion and the game of golf itself, while infusing a layer of Hip-Hop style!
At OG Golf Apparel, we understand and respect that the game of golf is steeped in history and tradition, and that this forms an important part of its identity and appeal. As such, preserving and upholding such tradition is obviously of paramount importance in terms of honouring and furthering the sport. That said, we also believe that stringent adherence to such tradition is actually harmful to the game of golf and is stymying its expansion.
It has resulted in the game earning a reputation as being somewhat staid, strait-laced, and fuddy-duddy, which, although some strides have been made in the right direction, it still struggles to shake off.
Golf is in competition for fans, viewers, spectators, and participants both amateur and professional, with so many other sports; particularly in the US with the NFL, NBA and MLB. When compared with these sports, golf is viewed by many as simply, uncool!
From the early 80’s to the present day, Hip-Hop music and culture has had a material effect and influence on fashion, sportswear, and sport; setting trends and defining what is cool!
Hip-Hop fashion and culture embraced sports and sportswear, with artists throughout the decades donning American Football, basketball, and baseball jerseys, tracksuits, bomber and varsity jackets, basketball sneakers, snapback hats, bucket hats, et al; and major sports and sportswear brands have in turn embraced Hip-Hop, Adidas being the first to do so when they collaborated with Run-DMC following the success of their hit ‘My Adidas’.
Golf, however, is one sport which, for one reason or another, has not welcomed such a collaboration with Hip-Hop artists, style, fashion and culture, and OG Golf Apparel aims to change this.
Snoop Dogg said it best himself when visiting and playing at Augusta National Golf Course prior to its annual Masters Tournament in 2017, when he summed up his visit by saying to the Mail Online, that while he enjoyed the experience, he hoped to make it “more Hip-Hop”.
“Hopefully I can influence them [The Masters] to invite more people like myself, who are cool, and who are Hip-Hop and who are about other things and bring some flavour to The Masters and not let it be quiet”.
In taking inspiration from original golfing attire and original Hip-Hop style and fashion, we aim to bring some of that Hip-Hop flavour Snoop Dogg recognized as missing from the game, into our designs, to produce something materially different from anything else on the market, and something that is original in and of itself. That’s what makes us OG (Original) Golf Apparel.
As a London (UK) based brand, all our apparel is designed and ethically and sustainably manufactured in London; making OG Golf Apparel, STRAIGHT OUT OF LONDON!
